What is fibre broadband?
Fibre broadband is a broadband service that is delivered partly or fully to your home via fibre optic cables. Fibre is faster and more reliable than standard ADSL broadband which only uses copper phone lines.

FFibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) is the most widely available and popular type of broadband. FTTC uses fibre optic cables your nearby exchange up to the nearest telephone cabinet (those green boxes by the side of the road). Then for the rest of the journey into your home it utilises the same traditional copper wire as an ADSL service. Using the copper wires for the last leg can slow the speed down, but it is still much faster than full ADSL.
Fibre To The Home
Fibre to the Home (FTTH), also known as fibre to the premises (FTTP), or Full Fibre broadband. This is the most reliable, fastest broadband with a pure fibre optic cable running the full distance right to your home. This gives you lightning fast speeds as it doesn't rely on copper cables at any point.
How fast is fibre?
The speed of your fibre depends on a few factors such as your location, the distance from the cabinet to your home and the package you choose. Generally fibre speeds can be split into 3 categories:
Superfast - Superfast usually means download speeds of at least 30Mbps. Most UK providers will fall into this category, with with average download speeds of between 35-65 Mbps. This would be more than enough for most households, and is a big improvement from standard ADSL broadband which sits at around 10Mbps average.
Ultrafast - Download speeds of at least 100Mbps.
Hyperfast - Also known as gigabit broadband, at 1 Gbps, it’s up to 10 times faster than the average home broadband connection.
Is fibre broadband available in my area?
Chances are you will be able to get fibre broadband. Currently, fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) broadband is available to around 98% of UK households. However, full-fibre broadband is only available to around 8.2 million homes (28%), so you might have to wait a little longer for that.
Should I choose fibre?
To answer this question really depends on what you use your connection for. Not everybody needs Ultrafast or even Superfast speeds.
Here are some of the reasons why fibre might be the best option for you.
Large households with lots of devices
The more people in your household the more devices you have connected at any one time - phones, laptops, TV's etc. If you have more than five devices, you will most likely need fibre broadband, especially if some members are heavy users.
Streaming TV or movies
If you use streaming services like Netflix and Amazon, or catch up services like BBC iPlayer then you'll certainly benefit from fibre. It is possible to steam with a standard ADSL connection, but you will probably struggle to watch in HD or if there are a few devices watching at the same time.
Gaming
Downloading and playing games can be done on ADSL, but it will be very very slow. Games are usually huge files so you'll definitely want to get fibre if you're a gamer.
Video calling
Whilst standard ADSL broadband can cope with the likes of Skype and Facetime, you will notice much better quality with fibre, especially if there are a few participants.
Downloading and uploading
Again, ADSL is capable of this, but if you are transferring large files, it's going to take longer. Not the end of the world if you only do it occasionally. But if this is a regular activity for you, for example uploading videos to YouTube, then this will be much faster with fibre.
If none of these apply then it may not be necessary to spend extra money on a service you won't need. If surfing the internet and using social media is pretty much all you use your broadband for, then good old ADSL should be enough.
Though it is worth bearing in mind the cost difference between ADSL and fibre might not be as much as you think. Yes, ADSL is usually cheaper, but the saving isn't as huge as it once was. Keep your eye on the and you can likely get a good fibre for only a few pounds a month more than ADSL.
Which providers offer fibre broadband?
All the big UK providers offer some sort of fibre.
Virgin Media
Virgin Media offer the fastest widely available fibre broadband in the UK. Their M350 package has average speeds of 362Mb.

Skys Superfast fibre broadband has average speeds of 59Mb. In October 2019 they launched their Ultrafast service with speeds of 145Mb.

BT
The most popular broadband provider in the UK, BT's Superfast Fibre 2 package has speeds averaging 67Mb. They have also rolled out Ultrafast packages with speeds up to 300Mb, but this isn't yet as widely available as the Superfast packages.
NOW Broadband
NOW Broadband Super Fibre package has average speeds of 63Mb. They also offer contracts on a monthly basis, though you can expect to pay more for these.

Best known for its mobile network and love of Kevin Bacon, EE offers average speeds of 67Mb on their Fibre Plus package, plus great extras for mobile customers.
KCOM
KCOM is the only fixed line network that covers Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire. Their Lightstream fibre broadband packages offer unlimited FTTH broadband with average speeds of 30, 75, 200, 400 and 900Mbps.

If your current provider is Virgin Media then you will need to let them know that you're leaving and it's up to you to coordinate the end of one contract and the start of another.
