All you need to know about Community Fibre Broadband

Unlike providers that rely on the Openreach network, Community Fibre operates its own 100% full-fibre network, with fibre connected directly to customers' homes.

What is Community Fibre?
Community Fibre is a UK broadband provider that builds and operates its own full-fibre network. The company was established in 2010 and has grown its network to pass more than 1.3 million premises.
Its network is different from the traditional fibre-to-the-cabinet connections still used by some broadband providers. With Community Fibre's full-fibre service, the fibre connection runs all the way to your property, rather than relying on copper telephone cables for the final part of the journey.
Full fibre can provide faster and more consistent connections, particularly when several people and devices are using the internet at the same time. Community Fibre also offers symmetrical speeds on many of its packages, meaning upload speeds can match download speeds.
Community Fibre broadband speeds
Community Fibre offers a wide range of broadband speeds, from entry-level packages for lighter internet use through to multi-gigabit services designed for demanding households.
Depending on availability at your address, packages can include speeds such as 35Mbps, 75Mbps, 100Mbps, 150Mbps, 300Mbps, 500Mbps, 1Gbps, 2.5Gbps and 5Gbps, with higher-speed services also available in selected areas.
Community Fibre currently advertises speeds of up to 8.5Gbps, although the packages and maximum speed available to you will depend on your address.
It's worth remembering that advertised broadband speeds normally refer to a wired connection. WiFi speeds can be lower depending on your router, device, distance from the router, walls and other sources of interference.
Which Community Fibre speed do I need?
You don't necessarily need the fastest broadband package available. Unless your household is downloading enormous files all day, paying extra for several gigabits of speed may provide little noticeable benefit.
35Mbps to 100Mbps
Best suited to lighter internet use, such as browsing, email, social media, online banking and streaming on a small number of devices.
150Mbps to 500Mbps
A good choice for most households. These speeds are suitable for streaming, gaming, video calls, working from home and multiple connected devices.
1Gbps
Ideal for busy households with lots of connected devices, frequent large downloads and uploads, 4K streaming, gaming or multiple people working from home.
2.5Gbps and above
Multi-gigabit broadband is aimed at households with particularly demanding internet use, multiple heavy users or compatible networking equipment. It can also be useful for people who regularly move very large files or want to make the most of high-end wired connections.
For most households, however, a good 150Mbps, 300Mbps or 500Mbps full-fibre connection will be more than sufficient.
Can I get Community Fibre broadband?
Community Fibre is primarily available in London, where it has built its own full-fibre network. The provider also has coverage in some areas outside London, so it's worth checking even if you're not in the capital.
Availability is determined by your individual address rather than simply your town or postcode area. Use Community Fibre's availability checker to see which packages and speeds are available at your property.
If Community Fibre isn't available, you can use our broadband deals comparison to see what other full-fibre providers are available in your area.
Community Fibre WiFi and routers
Community Fibre includes a router with its broadband packages, with the exact equipment depending on the speed of the package you choose.
Current equipment includes Linksys routers using WiFi 5, WiFi 6 and WiFi 7 technology. Higher-speed packages use newer WiFi 7 equipment, while Community Fibre also offers more advanced mesh equipment with its Premium WiFi service.
It's important to distinguish between your broadband speed and your WiFi speed. A 1Gbps broadband connection doesn't mean every device in your home will achieve 1Gbps over WiFi. Your device, WiFi standard, distance from the router and the construction of your home can all affect the speed you actually experience.
What is Community Fibre Premium WiFi?
Community Fibre's Premium WiFi is designed for larger homes and households that need better WiFi coverage throughout the property. It uses additional mesh equipment where required and includes an engineer-led setup on eligible packages.
Community Fibre's Premium WiFi service includes a whole-home coverage guarantee. The current guarantee is based on achieving at least 50Mbps of WiFi across a home of up to 12 rooms, including up to five bedrooms and three floors.
This makes Premium WiFi particularly relevant if your home has thick walls, several floors or areas where your existing WiFi struggles to reach.
Does Community Fibre offer TV?
Yes. Community Fibre offers an optional TV service powered by Netgem, which can be added to eligible broadband packages.
Community Fibre TV currently includes more than 240 live channels, more than 30 included apps and streaming services, over 250,000 hours of content and more than 45 free games. A Netgem 4K TV box is included with the service.
You can also add paid streaming services including Netflix, NOW, Prime Video, Discovery+, Hayu and Rakuten TV. These extras can be added or removed depending on your requirements.
Community Fibre TV pricing varies depending on the broadband package and contract you choose, so check the current offers above for the latest price.
One thing to be aware of is that an aerial is required for live Freeview channels. Other apps and content can be accessed without an aerial.
Does Community Fibre offer a home phone service?
Yes. Community Fibre offers an optional home phone service delivered over your broadband connection.
The current service costs £12 per month and includes unlimited calls to UK landlines and mobiles. There is no traditional copper phone line or line rental requirement for Community Fibre broadband.
If you don't need a home phone, you can simply take broadband on its own.
Community Fibre contracts and price rises
Community Fibre broadband is available on a range of contract lengths, depending on the deal and where you buy it. Standard options can include 12- and 24-month contracts, while selected 18-month Community Fibre deals are also available through EweCompare.
Our 18-month offers aren't necessarily advertised on Community Fibre's main website. Where an eligible offer is available, you'll be able to order it through our dedicated Community Fibre landing page and go directly to the basket.
Does Community Fibre increase prices during the contract?
Yes. Community Fibre applies a £3 monthly price increase every April. Importantly, this increase applies even if you're still within your minimum contract term.
This means the price you see when you sign up isn't necessarily the price you'll pay for the entire minimum term. For example, if you take a broadband package at £25 a month and a £3 April increase applies during your contract, your monthly price would increase to £28 from April.
The exact amount you'll pay therefore depends on when you join, the length of your contract and when the annual April increase falls during your minimum term.
What happens when my Community Fibre contract ends?
Once your minimum contract term has ended, you can renew your contract, switch provider or remain with Community Fibre on a rolling 30-day arrangement.
If you remain out of contract, Community Fibre applies an additional £4 a month to the broadband price you were paying at the end of your minimum term. The regular £3 April price increase can then continue to apply.
It's therefore worth checking both the initial price and the post-contract price when comparing Community Fibre deals. A longer contract may give you a lower promotional price, but the annual April increase can still apply before your minimum term ends.
In short: Community Fibre's £3 April increase can apply during your minimum contract term. Once your minimum term ends, staying out of contract adds a further £4 a month to your broadband price, with the annual April increase continuing to apply.
Community Fibre's 30-day satisfaction guarantee
Community Fibre offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee on its full-fibre broadband service.
If you're unhappy with your connection within the first 30 days and Community Fibre cannot resolve the problem, you can leave without paying an exit fee, subject to the provider's terms and conditions.
This gives new customers some additional protection if the service doesn't perform as expected once it's installed in their home.
Is Community Fibre broadband any good?
Community Fibre is an attractive option if it's available at your address, particularly if you want full fibre, fast upload speeds and a provider that doesn't require traditional line rental.
Its biggest advantage is its network. Because Community Fibre operates its own 100% full-fibre infrastructure, it can offer symmetrical speeds and multi-gigabit packages that aren't available from many traditional broadband providers.
It's also worth considering the contract and pricing structure. Community Fibre's headline prices can be competitive, but you should look at the price after the initial contract period as well as the promotional monthly cost.
Community Fibre broadband: pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| 100% full-fibre network | Availability is still concentrated mainly in London |
| Very fast download and upload speeds | Multi-gigabit speeds are only available at selected addresses |
| Unlimited data on broadband packages | Not every household will benefit from paying for the very fastest packages |
| No traditional line rental required | WiFi performance can be considerably lower than the headline wired speed |
| Router included | Premium WiFi is an additional service |
| Optional TV and home phone services | Broadband prices increase by £3 every April, including during the contract |
| 30-day satisfaction guarantee | A further £4/month is added when the minimum term ends if you remain out of contract |
| Selected 18-month deals available through EweCompare | Availability and pricing vary by address and offer |
Our verdict: is Community Fibre worth considering?
If you're in an area covered by its network, Community Fibre is one of the more interesting alternatives to the UK's major broadband providers. Its 100% full-fibre network offers excellent upload speeds, no traditional line rental and some seriously fast packages.
For most households, there's no need to jump straight to the most expensive multi-gigabit package. A 150Mbps to 500Mbps connection should comfortably handle everyday browsing, streaming, gaming and working from home, while 1Gbps and faster packages make more sense for particularly busy households and heavy users.
The most important thing is to compare the total cost and contract length, rather than simply choosing the biggest number on the speed chart. Remember that Community Fibre's £3 annual April price increase can apply during your minimum term, while remaining out of contract adds a further £4 a month to your broadband price.
And if you're looking for an 18-month contract, it's worth checking EweCompare's offers before going directly to the provider, as selected 18-month Community Fibre deals are available through our affiliate channel that aren't advertised on Community Fibre's main website.
