What is a broadband only deal?

So you'd think that this is a pretty easy question right? Well, once you start to look in more detail, the term 'broadband only' can mean different things.

We've tried to break down the different ways broadband only can be interpreted below.

Broadband without a phone line

This is probably the first thing that comes to mind when you think about broadband only. But the reality is that broadband without a phone line is rare as most providers use phone lines to deliver broadband to your home. That said, there are some broadband without a phone line options available.

We've done a full guide on broadband without a phone line

Broadband and pay as you go calls

This is likely to be what most providers are referring to when they advertise a broadband only deal. You will still need to pay the line rental and have the option to upgrade to a call package such as evenings or weekends if you wish.

Broadband without a TV package

The easiest way to get broadband and TV in your home is often to combine them into 1 bundle with the same provider, and this is certainly a popular choice for a huge number of customers. So for some, the term broadband only can simply mean they want the internet without a TV package. Of course if you opt for broadband without TV, you will still need to pay line rental.

Which providers offer broadband only deals?

Given how hard it is to define what each provider means by broadband only, comparing deals can be tricky.

Below is a quick overview of what the main UK providers offer for broadband only deals.

  • Virgin Media broadband only deals - Virgin Media operates separately to the Openreach network, so they are able to offer their broadband without a phone line
  • Sky broadband only deals - Sky broadband comes with PAYG calls. They do not currently offer a package without a phone line
  • BT broadband only deals - BT has recently started offering all its broadband packages as 'true' broadband only without phone calls or a landline
  • TalkTalk broadband only deals - TalkTalk offer 100% full fibre which give you broadband only, no phone line. This has limited availability though so you will need to check with TalkTalk if it’s in your area
  • NOW broadband only deals - NOW Broadband offer 3 broadband packages, all of which come with a landline included
  • EE broadband only deals - EE broadband only deals - EE Full Fibre broadband is available without a phone line for this customers in it’s full fibre network
  • Plusnet broadband only deals - Plusnet does not currently offer any broadband deals without a phone line

Is a broadband only deal right for me?

A broadband only deal is a great option if you never use your landline, but it’s not without its downsides.

The most obvious downside is the availability. The few providers that do offer broadband without a landline do so on their full fibre networks. These still have limited availability, so if you are not in an area where full fibre is available, then you will have to take the landline option.

It is not necessary cheaper to get broadband without a landline. Full fibre tends to be more expensive, so depending on the speed you were looking for, it might be more cost effective to get a cheaper package with a landline and just never use it.

Will I save money by getting a broadband only deal?

Not necessarily. Most providers with broadband only options use FTTP. This give you ultrafast speeds, but at a much higher price point. If speed isn’t a priority, then you may find that it is cheaper to have a phone line and pay for the line rental fees.

Can I get broadband without a landline?

Yes - you can get broadband without a phone line, but your options are limited.

Most providers use the Openreach FTTC network to deliver broadband to your property, and this requires an active phone line. However, due to the rise of FTTP connections, it is possible to get broadband without a phone line. There are also providers that run on their own network, such as Virgin Media and Hyperoptic.

Can I get unlimited broadband without a landline?

Absolutely. Most broadband deals are actually unlimited, regardless of whether they come with or without a landline.

Can I get fibre broadband without a landline?

Yes, you can. Most broadband without a landline is full fibre. This is because a full fibre connection is needed to be able to deliver broadband without the need for a landline.

Some of the big providers, such as BT, EE, TalkTalk, Virgin Media, offer full fibre broadband that doesn’t require you to sign up for a landline.

How to switch

Once you have found the deal you want, simply click the ‘View Deal’ button. This will take you to the providers website, who will guide you through the rest of the process.

If your current provider is Virgin Media then you will need to let them know that you're leaving and it's up to you to coordinate the end of one contract and the start of another.
