All you need to know about EE Broadband

EE, or to give its full name Everything Everywhere, was formed in 2010 as a result of the merger between Orange and T-Mobile. Owned by BT, they are best known for their mobile network and launching the UK's first 4G network. In 2015 they entered the home broadband market offering both standard ADSL and fibre packages.

Let's take a look in more detail at what EE Broadband has to offer.

EE Broadband packages

Standard - Average download speeds of 10Mb perfect for small households with basic browsing and streaming.

Fibre - Average download speeds of 36Mb is great for families, so everyone can be online at once and do more across multiple devices.

Fibre Plus - Average download speeds of 67Mb for HD streaming, downloading and gaming simultaneously on multiple devices.

Fibre Max100 - Average download speeds of 145Mb for even more 4K and HD devices running smoothly on a connection 13x faster than Standard Broadband.

Fibre Max300 - Average download speeds of 300Mb so you can seamlessly play online games on your 4K TV.

From 24th September EE launched their Full Fibre (FTTP) plans to customers who live in enabled Full Fibre premises. This can give speeds of up to 900Mb. However, coverage is limited. The aim is to cover 5.7 million homes by the end of 2020, so you will need to check with EE to see if your postcode is currently covered.

EE Home Phone

In August 2020, EE started offering broadband without a phone line on FTTC fibre plans. This is thanks to SOGEA technology (Single Order Genetic Ethernet Access) which enables broadband providers to deliver a copper line with the voice component stripped out. However because the same copper line into the home is still used to deliver the broadband component, the savings are small.

Those who still want a landline can add one back in, along with one of the following call packages:

  • Anytime calls to UK Landlines
  • Anytime calls to UK Landlines & Mobiles add-on
  • Anytime UK & International calls add-on
  • Pay as you go calls

Why choose EE Broadband?

Unlimited broadband with no traffic management

All EE Broadband packages come with unlimited downloads and no traffic management, so you will not be slowed down at peak times or have to worry about how much you are using.

Extra data boosts for EE mobile customers

Customers who also have an EE mobile package receive a bonus 5Gb of data a month. Those who sign up for a Fibre Max plan get this increased to a whopping 20Gb a month.

No landline required

In August 2020 EE began offering broadband without a landline for fibre customers. The saving is small, just a couple of pounds, but it means you are not forced into taking a landline you will never use. Of course, you can still opt for a landline and call plan if you choose.

Norton Security

EE Broadband customers get one years free Norton Security Premium, usually worth £79.99. This gives protection on up to 10 devices.

Apple TV+

EE pay monthly mobile customers who sign up for a broadband and TV bundle get Apple TV+ free for 1 year. Learn more about EE TV packages.

Great UK based customer service

The Telecoms and Pay TV Complaints Report from Ofcom (published 13th November 2020), shows that EE take the prize for the second quarter running with the lowest volume of fixed broadband complaints - 3 per 100,000 customers.

Cancellation credit

What's bad about EE Broadband?

Long Contracts

The shortest contract is 18 months for fibre. 12 month contracts are available for standard broadband but these are often significantly more expensive than their 18 month equivalent.

What equipment do I get?

Customers signing up to EE Broadband will receive either the Bright Box 1 or the Smart Hub router. Standard broadband customers get the Bright Box whilst fibre customers get the Smart Hub.

The Bright Box is pretty basic as far as routers go, but for standard broadband it works just fine.

The Smart Hub provides EE's strongest WiFi signal so far, with seven internal WiFi settings and dual WiFi bands it is designed to handle multiple devices at once. It also has plenty of user options to help you stay in control. For example, you can see who’s currently connected and how much data they are using. It also allows parents to restrict WiFi to certain devices at certain times, ideal if you need to stop the kids from getting distracted at bedtime.
