What is a broadband, TV & phone package?
A broadband, TV & phone package is a single package that contains all three services from the same provider.
These types of packages are also known as triple play bundles.
Why choose a broadband, TV & phone package?
There are several reasons why bundling your broadband, TV & phone together is a great choice.
Cost - Bundling your service into one package can save a lot of money, as it is almost always cheaper than taking them separately. You can also take advantage of special offers for new customers.
Convenience - Having your broadband, TV & phone under one bill is much easier to keep track of, and also means only having to deal with one customer service team should you need help or support.
Easy to switch - When your contract is up, switching should be easier as you only have one provider to deal with.
How to choose a broadband, TV & phone package?
Of course there are a few things to consider to make sure you get the broadband, TV & phone deal that is right for you.
Broadband speed - How many people are in your household? Do you have lots of devices connected? Check the estimated speed of the broadband to make sure it is going to be sufficient for your needs. As a general guide you should allow at least 10Mb for each internet user, double that for anyone who streams to their own TV, and triple it for gamers.
What you like to watch - TV packages come with a huge choice now from basic Freeview up to the huge full packages with Sports and Cinema. Be honest about what channels you and your family actually need, as this will have a big impact on the cost.
Download limits - Most suppliers now have unlimited broadband, but this is still something you should double check to avoid any nasty surprises on your bill.
Phone use - Do you need a specific call plan, such as international calls? Think about how much you use your landline so you can get the best call plan. Most providers offer basic pay as you go plan as standard, but it may be worth upgrading this if you use your landline a lot.
Extras - Little extras can have a big impact on the monthly price you will end up paying. If you need multiroom TV for example, or want to watch in HD, this will increase the price you pay.
Contract length - Contract lengths can vary wildly between providers, some offering monthly, some offering no less than 18 month contracts. If you're a student, or only renting for a short term this will be an important consideration.
End of contract price hikes - You can get some great as a new customer, but these are usually only for the length of your contract. Be sure to check the cost once your minimum term is over, as this can be a steep increase.
Who offers broadband, TV & phone packages?
Most of the big providers offer broadband, TV & phone packages.
Sky - Sky TV comes via a satellite dish that's fitted to your home. Their broadband is delivered using the OpenReach network and has an average top speed of 59Mb.
Virgin Media - Virgin Media has the fastest widely available broadband in the UK with speeds up to an average of 350Mb.
BT - The biggest broadband provider in the UK, BT offers speeds up to an average of 67Mb.
EE - EE TV is via an Apple TV 4K box and has broadband speeds with an average up to 67Mb.
TalkTalk - One of the more affordable providers, TalkTalk broadband has speeds up to 67Mb plus a Freeview based TV service with flexible boosts such as BT Sport.
NOW broadband - A great option for those looking for flexibility. NOW TV has flexible monthly TV passes such as Entertainment, Kids and Sky Sports, and an average broadband speed of up to 63Mb.
Can I get broadband and TV from different providers?
You can get your broadband and TV from different providers, but it does depend on which providers you choose. You could, for example, take your broadband with Virgin Media and your TV from Sky. However, some providers, such as BT, do require you to take their broadband if you want their TV, so this may restrict your options slightly.
How to switch
Once you have found the deal you want, simply click the ‘View Deal’ button. This will take you to the providers website, who will guide you through the rest of the process.
If your current provider is Virgin Media then you will need to let them know that you're leaving and it's up to you to coordinate the end of one contract and the start of another.
Some broadband providers may increase monthly prices in line with the retail or consumer price index each year during the length of your contract. Please refer to individual broadband provider's terms and conditions before signing up.
